At Agavus, each wooden watch is a unique work of art that reflects the dedication and passion of our designers and craftsmen.
The creative process behind each watch combines traditional techniques and modern technology to create pieces that are not only functional, but also aesthetically appealing.
Wood Selection
It all starts with the selection of the wood. We use high-quality, sustainable woods, each with its own unique characteristics and grain. The choice of wood is crucial, as it determines the durability and final appearance of the watch, the type of response to machining, as well as the finish that can be given to the final piece. In the prototyping process, a couple of woods are selected to see how they react before choosing the winner.
Design and Conceptualization
Our designers work closely together to sketch out ideas and concepts. Selecting finishes, ordering indicators, color of inputs such as crowns, buckles, hands. They draw inspiration from nature, architecture and current trends to create designs that are both modern and timeless. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to perfect the details and ensure that each piece fits together perfectly. As well as conceptualizing in 3D to be able to visualize the final machined piece.
Cutting and shaping
Once the design is finalized, the wood is cut and shaped using high-precision miter saws and table saws. This step requires great skill and attention to detail to ensure that each piece is cut to millimeter precision. It is then placed on a computer-controlled CNC router. The Aspire program file is processed to give the cutting parameters and speed to the drill bits. In this step, we observe the reaction of the wood to the machining. We modify cutting parameters to correct any imperfections.
Sanding and Polishing
After cutting, the pieces are meticulously sanded to smooth the surfaces and bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Sponge sanders are used to obtain a smooth, even finish. The pieces are then polished to give them a natural shine and protect the wood from the elements. The next step is to apply a wax and vegetable oils for protection.
Assembly
Assembly is a delicate process that requires precision and patience. Our craftsmen hand-assemble each watch, ensuring that all parts fit together perfectly and function properly. Special attention is paid to the internal mechanisms to ensure the accuracy and durability of the watch.
Prototypes
Once we have prototypes with different features, woods and finishes, we make a meticulous selection to evaluate the pros and cons of each model. This is a complex process since, for reasons of production optimization and quality assurance, we cannot manufacture hundreds of different models. During the prototyping phase, we produce around 20 pieces with different woods, finishes and dial designs. We select the characteristics that we like most from these pieces to form the final model.
Quality control
Before a watch leaves our workshop, it goes through a rigorous quality control process. We check every aspect of the watch, from the workings of the mechanism to the final finish. Only watches that meet our strict standards are approved for sale.
The final piece...
Personalization
One of the most exciting aspects of our watches is the ability to personalize them. We use a laser engraving machine to add messages, names or special dates, making each watch truly unique and meaningful to its owner.
Packaging and Shipping
Finally, the watches are carefully packed in boxes designed to protect them during shipping. We make sure that every customer receives their watch in perfect condition and ready to wear or give as a gift.
